My #1 historical performance has to be the Battle Royal recording with Count Basie and Duke Ellington's Big Bands. They set up the room with the two bands facing each other. And they pumped out the sound. I can picture the two bands treating it like a heavyweight fight. The Battle Royal song is an absolute barn burner that builds and builds until the two bands turn to Cat Anderson to say "bring us home".

I would have killed to be in that room. As much for the recording as for what must have been an incredibly fun day.

Some other favorites stories:
1. Chopin Minute Waltz being played from rebel radio stations as the Nazi's invaded.
2. Louis Armstrongs first gig in Chicago.
3. The NY Philarmonics performance in North Korea.

What are your favorite music recordings or performances? Do you share them with your students?
